I never realized how long Ted Kennedy had fought for
health care reform till now. I really liked his position that quality, affordable health care should be a
fundamental right in this country and not a privilege.
We are living the nightmare now with my stepdaughter. She
had just graduated from college in May and was riding her bike hoom from work in downtown Boston in June and was struck
lightly by a car but enough to break off a small piece of bone above her knee. It required surgery and she has
two screws in and months of no weight bearing and then therapy.
Her insurance company did not cover the anti blood cot shots
($800-found that out in the hospital) nor the machine to exercise her leg ($30/day-found that out two months later). Her grandparents
kicked in some for the meds (we got the state to help with the rest) and she will return the machine but will have to
pay for that, about $900.
This Friday she has a follow up with her surgeon but the
insurance company is requiring her to get a referral from her primary physician (which she does not have since she used
the clinic at school). So she had to quickly find a Dr. and make an appoinment for this Monday so she can see the
SAME guy that did the surgery. It's absurd.
Health insurance in this country is great as long
as you pay big bucks or don't have to use it.
